Historic Kirkcudbright High Street

Following our enjoyable walk around Gatehouse in May, members of all three U3A History Groups braved the wet weather last week to visit Moat Brae and then stroll down Kirkcudbright High Street.  The walk was led by Don Cowell who explained historic aspects of both the High Street and Kirkcudbright town.

Our first visit was Greyfriars Church then on to a restored 18th century townhouse where we had an excellent presentation on the stages of the restoration journey. Our final stop was the ever interesting Greengate Close, home of Jessie King and E A Taylor, where they held their summer art school and which Dorothy L Sayers used for the setting of her novel ”Five Red Herrings”.
