Monthly meeting – 28 November

Our speaker this month is Stewartry U3A member, Professor Don Cowell.  Many of us were present to enjoy his talk in 2015 on Kirkcudbright Jail and he is back by popular demand to talk about the Poorhouse.  The Kirkcudbright Poorhouse was opened in Kirkcudbright in 1851 and was demolished after it closed in 1953.  Scottish poor law, reformed in 1845, enabled Parishes to join together to pay for building poorhouses to look after orphans, unmarried mothers, the infirm, the destitute, the aged and the sick.  Most parishes in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire combined their resources to support the Poorhouse in Kirkcudbright which therefore served most of the Stewartry. This talk tells the story of this now forgotten building and people who lived there.  It reminds us of an important period of our social history and an approach society used at the time to deal with poverty.  Based on careful research on original sources it includes a forgotten tale of a sexual scandal in Victorian times.  Don has also spoken to and obtained memories from someone who lived in the Poorhouse before it closed.
