Trip to Devil’s Porridge Museum and Annandale Distillery – 18 May 2015

March 26th, 2015Comments Off on Trip to Devil’s Porridge Museum and Annandale Distillery – 18 May 2015

The Devil’s Porridge Museum has been expanded over the past 17 years by the local community, from a small exhibition in St John Church, Eastriggs to a larger uninsulated industrial shed to now our fantastic interactive museum.

For centuries, the quiet, rural area around the tiny hamlets of Eastriggs and Gretna lay undisturbed with only a few farms and small settlements dotted about. By 1917 the factory was producing 1,100 tons of cordite per week, more than all the other munitions plants in Britain combined, providing much-needed ammunition or the troops fighting on the front line. Stretching for nine miles, HM Factory Gretna was one of the most remarkable factories on Earth employing 30,000 workers, at its height, to manufacture RDB Cordite, a new type of munitions propellant.

Annandale Distillery has started producing single malt Scotch whisky after almost a 100 year sleep. The guided tours take in the fascinating past with a glimpse into the future, Learn about the brands and be among the first to taste our New Make Spirit, Rascally Liquor. (Note: there is no actual whisky tasting as it will be 2018 before they are allowed to call it whisky)

We will leave Kirkcudbright at 9.00 and Castle Douglas at 9.20 and return at about 4.30. The first stop will be the Museum for tea, coffee and cake, then on to the Distillery for lunch and tours. The cost of this tour will be £28 if you want to include the distillery tour and £20 for just the museum. Both include the refreshments at the Museum.
